A Christ Tradition

“Thanks be unto God for his unspeakable gift.” II Cor. 9:15

Jesus revealed the gift of Love and the sick were healed. He revealed the gift of Life and raised the dead. He revealed the gift of Truth and sinners were reformed. Giving requires receiving. If the gifts that are given are left in their beautifully wrapped packages adorned with golden bows without being opened, their blessings will never be realized.

Mary Baker Eddy opens her major work, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures with this account of that beautiful night in Bethlehem:

“To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, to-day is big with blessings. The wakeful shepherd beholds the first faint morning beams, ere cometh the full radiance of a risen day. So shone the pale star to the prophet‐ shepherds; yet it traversed the night, and came where, in cradled obscurity, lay the Bethlehem babe, the human herald of Christ, Truth, who would make plain to benighted understanding the way of salvation through Christ Jesus, till across a night of error should dawn the morning beams and shine the guiding star of being. The Wisemen were led to behold and to follow this daystar of divine Science, lighting the way to eternal harmony.” S&H VII:1

Had the Wisemen not been led to “behold and to follow” that star, or had Mary and Joseph not received the gifts of the Magi, providing for the family’s journey into Egypt, the light of Truth would not have been received and the way of salvation lost to all mankind. But the Wisemen did follow the star and the light of Truth shone for all to follow. The Christ, Truth that Eddy explains: “… has come with some measure to all prepared to receive Christ, Truth.” S&H 333: 21- 23, was received by those whom Jesus healed, the disciples whom he taught, and Eddy who discovered and brought the Science of the Christ to the world.

To receive this gift and all its benefits we must prepare by “leaning on the sustaining infinite”. We must fervently pray to know God and His Christ as the foundation of infinite good. We must tear away the false sense of matter as the basis of life and untie the ribbons that would bind thought to the belief of substance in matter. When the Christ is revealed, let us open our hearts to its fullness and gracefully receive the blessings bestowed that each of us may be fitted to receive more, that each of us may gracefully manifest the goodness of our Father-Mother God in good deeds and love for all mankind.

The Christ is here today bringing us gifts in the form of God messages. If we “unwrap them” by leaning on the “sustaining infinite” and following, we will be able to truly appreciate them and our day will be “big with blessings.”
