New bitesize learning videos on heart failure

Nursing Times has launched a new set of bitesize learning videos on heart failure, which affects nearly one million patients in the UK with 200,000 new diagnoses every year.

This independent video learning series on heart failure is funded by the Boehringer Ingelheim and Lilly Alliance. The BI Lilly Alliance had no influence over the content.

In spite of research, campaigns and other progress over the last decade, the prognosis for heart failure remains poor, even for patients aged under 75 years.

For example, according to the 2022 National Heart Failure Audit, the one-year mortality rate for patients admitted with heart failure was 39%, which was unchanged from the previous year.

The British Society for Heart Failure also notes that an estimated 385,000 more people in the UK have heart failure but are undiagnosed and, consequently, missing out on treatment.

These numbers are on the rise due to several factors including the ageing population, according to the society.

In addition, 80% of heart failure is diagnosed in hospital where 40% of people had symptoms that should have triggered an earlier assessment in primary care in the months prior.

As a result, we have created a series of short videos on heart failure through which we want to support nurses to increase their knowledge about the condition.

We have produced five videos with the aim of explaining the pathophysiology of heart failure, its causes, diagnosis and management, and also palliative care.

They are intended to help you to organise learning to fit in with your schedule, providing concise information accompanied by learning activities to support continuing professional development.

Our collective aim is to create a resource that will help nurses understand more about heart failure and, as a result, improve their knowledge and skills, and ultimately patient care.

Each video features a presentation by a nurse expert in heart failure. Each video is also accompanied by references and a list of useful resources.

The five videos available are:
