I was taught as a very junior nurse by a fabulous continence nurse that padding patients up simply made people incontinent. Once incontinent it is hard to retrain the bladders of elderly patients even when they don’t have dementia. In addition you have made one more person unsafe to go back to their accommodation, at risk of sores, infection and worst of all you have taken away their dignity. I had countless arguments with staff about it when I managed elderly care 25 years ago. If we are still having to point out such simple nursing facts in an article like this it is sad day for nursing. What next? Why we need to turn people? I honestly thought that nursing was improving when I was in my 20s. Now I am in my 50s I see we have learned very little. More interested in doing extended practice than getting the core elements right.

Comment on First Filipino executive chief nurse appointed in NHS by Mary Ronson https://www.nursingtimes.net/news/leadership-news/first-filipino-executive-chief-nurse-appointed-in-nhs-24-10-2023/#comment-13773 Fri, 01 Dec 2023 19:09:03 +0000 https://www.nursingtimes.net/?p=307487#comment-13773 Congratulations to Mr Soriano on his new position. I am both surprised and sad to hear though that race and colour of skin is still seen as a barrier to leadership roles. I for one work in a very diverse environment within the NHS. I would have thought that if someone had the right qualifications, right strengths and a good command of the language of the country they live in, opportunities would be open on an equal footing to anyone who applies. That is my understanding of equality.

Comment on Graduate status of nursing ‘not going away’, says deputy CNO by John Owen https://www.nursingtimes.net/news/education/graduate-status-of-nursing-not-going-away-says-deputy-cno-15-11-2023/#comment-13771 Tue, 28 Nov 2023 13:04:20 +0000 https://www.nursingtimes.net/?p=308764#comment-13771 Nursing a graduate profession? You could fool me, looking at my pay slips. A lot of studying, hard work and ongoing training for miniscule pay. WTF.

Comment on ‘We don’t treat our student nurses as well as we did when I joined the profession’ by Aidan Hindley https://www.nursingtimes.net/opinion/we-dont-treat-our-student-nurses-as-well-as-we-did-when-i-joined-the-profession-22-11-2023/#comment-13769 Mon, 27 Nov 2023 10:35:41 +0000 https://www.nursingtimes.net/?p=309363#comment-13769 A statement I agree with and as a nurse in a similar position of months not years who trained in 1982 I have made similar observations over the last few year I am really pleased that Nursing has a Degree level qualification and we are recognised for having obtained that level but I do feel it is to the detriment of those who do not have the academic qualifications to start with. I would have not been able to qualify for a degree place when I started but the Enrolled nurse training was my option but I went on to convert to RGN status and worked up to a Senior Nurse level in my chosen profession. The bedside or coal face training and experience I gained was and still is invaluable, it taught me so many skills which I still use today but I feel that these are not so easily taught but learned at the bedside. I am all for development, improvement and modernisation as everything needs to move forward but it should not always be at the expense of the old if it has merit and still applies. If we keep taking the nurses from other countries it must be realised that they are a finite resource which will negatively impact on that countries health care provision at some point.

Comment on Colours unveiled for national NHS uniform in England by Natalie Mulley https://www.nursingtimes.net/news/workforce/colours-unveiled-for-national-nhs-uniform-in-england-27-09-2023/#comment-13746 Thu, 28 Sep 2023 22:54:25 +0000 https://www.nursingtimes.net/?p=296457#comment-13746 I understand about having a unified colour system, and it’s a good idea, but I’m not sure this has been thought all the way through. They’ve missed out ranks (as pointed out in the article) and it’s only in scrubs? The nursing dress is comfortable and practical, and I shall miss it dearly if and when this comes in. There is a reason why so many nurses prefer the dresses.

It takes intelligence to reach simplicity, unnecessary complexity is the default of stupidity, and this mess looks complex to me. The NHS staff will wind up looking like a bowl of M&Ms. After a shift we’ll be going home with spots in front of our eyes.
I note there is no colour for doctors or surgeons. They get to fly under the radar, eh? Same for exec level staff. The NHS is health care, not a Mardi Gras. Could someone with a bit of good taste do something about this undignified and probably expensive mess?
