Chronic kidney disease is a category of kidney dysfunction, characterised by irreversible changes to kidney structure and a reduction in kidney function. 

Abstract

This fourth article in a series about the renal system examines chronic kidney disease. The condition’s epidemiology, causes and clinical markers, as well as the approach to diagnosis are explored. Also discussed is the current staging criteria and how this, alongside identification of the underlying causes, helps to predict progression and inform the management and treatment of the disease.
