Winners of the 2023 Student Nursing Times Awards revealed

There were winners across 22 categories at the awards ceremony, which honours the achievements of student nurses and nurse educators.

Banjo Tamiru took home the Mary Seacole Award for Outstanding Contribution to Diversity and Inclusion.

Judges described Mr Tamiru as a “selfless individual” and said his “commitment and determination” impacted communities at a local, regional and national perspective.

“Banjo's lived experiences as a refugee to the UK is a timely reminder and epitomises the value of diversity to the nursing profession and wider society,” they added.

Meanwhile, Jessica Vaughan, from Coventry University, won the award for Student Nurse of the Year: Adult.

Ms Vaughan was an “inspirational student nurse” who had developed confidence over the course of her programme, according to judges.

They said: “The profession will benefit from her innovative perspectives and attitudes to care.”

There was an impressive double win for the University of Chester, which was awarded Best Student Experience for its return to practice nursing course and Student Placement of the Year: Community for its creative health placement.

Judges described the university’s return to practice nursing scheme as an “exceptional and unique entry”.

They said: “[It was] great to see focus on nurses who are wanting to return to practice and reconnect with their professional incentives, in a respectful, responsive, passionate, flexible and caring way.”

Meanwhile, Andrew Bland, school director of simulation-based learning at the University of Huddersfield, took home the award for University Educator of the Year.

Judges said Dr Bland had had “a huge impact over a long career dedicated to simulation pedagogy”.

They noted that his “dedication and insight” had led to the design of a “ground-breaking” new facility at the university.
