Nursing Times team completes walk for charity supporting nurses

A team from Nursing Times has taken part in the annual fundraising event for Cavell Nurses’ Trust, with members completing a 10km walk through London.

On the afternoon of Thursday 7 October, the group did the 10k For Nurses & Midwives challenge in support of the charity, which seeks to help nursing and midwifery professionals who are struggling financially.

The event, which takes place annually, asks people to take on a personal 10k challenge and raise a minimum of £100 at some point during the month of October.

The Nursing Times team walked from our offices in Shoreditch down through the City of London to the Thames and then back again via the South Bank.

We are pictured during a stop-off at the statue of Mary Seacole outside Guy’s and St Thomas’s NHS Foundation Trust.

Those taking part came from across the different groups that work on Nursing Times, including members of the editorial team, the events team and the commercial and sales teams.

You can find more pictures of those taking part in the challenge around the UK on the social media site Twitter by using the hashtag #10kForNursesAndMidwives.

Cavell Nurses’ Trust aims to support nurses, midwives and healthcare assistants, both working and retired, when they are experiencing personal or financial hardship.

The memorial statue of Mary Seacole was unveiled on 30 June 2016 in the gardens of St Thomas’s Hospital and is the UK’s first in honour of a named black woman.

The unveiling followed a 12-year campaign for funding by the Mary Seacole Memorial Statue Appeal, raising over half a million pounds with much coming through small donations from nurses and others.

In November 2015, the government announced the donation of £240,000 of LIBOR banking fines to complete the funding needed for the statue’s installation.

The full height of the monument, including its plinth, is 4.9m. The figure of Mary weights 1.5 tons and the disc over 5 tons.

The statue was designed by artist Martin Jennings and the casting was produced by Pangolin Editions of Gloucestershire.
