A new learning unit on mental health has been created and added to the Nursing Times CPD Zone, which focuses on psychosis.

This unit is designed to be a basic introduction to psychosis, including epidemiology, symptoms, and biological, psychological and social aspects.

The unit – Psychosis: Understanding and Working with Psychotic Symptoms – also explores issues in therapy, medication, nursing management and the Nursing and Midwifery Council code of conduct.

After studying this learning unit, you should be able to identify specific psychotic symptoms and differentiate between having the experience of psychotic symptoms and being diagnosed with a psychotic disorder.

In addition, you should be able to list factors that increase risk of developing a psychotic disorder, describe theories about the causes of psychotic disorder and list possible barriers to a person with a psychotic disorder taking antipsychotic medication.

You should also be able to explain how the NMC Code applies to working with people with a psychotic disorder who are prescribed antipsychotics.

The unit was written by James Tighe, advanced nurse practitioner (mental health), Royal Marsden Hospital, and visiting fellow in advanced clinical practice in mental health, London South Bank University.

All Nursing Times learning units, of which there are 24 in total, are written by expert nurses and double-blind peer reviewed. Most of the units have also been updated over the last 18 months.

The Nursing Times CPD Zone offers online learning units on fundamental aspects of nursing care, written and peer-reviewed by experts, and many supported and endorsed by specialist organisations.

It also features the NT Portfolio, which provides an online space to record evidence of your other revalidation activities, providing evidence to your manager for appraisals, revalidation confirmation and career advancement purposes.

On successfully completing a learning unit, you gain a personalised certificate showing your score and the learning outcomes you’ve achieved.

This information is also added to your NT Portfolio as evidence of your revalidation activities.
